What is CTR?

CTR (click-through rate) is the share of people who click after seeing your ad or link: clicks divided by impressions. It's a fast read on whether your creative and targeting are landing. A strong CTR is encouraging, but clicks that don't convert still cost money - so pair CTR with the revenue those clicks produce.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CTR?

As a rough guide, search ads often see 2-5%, social feed ads 0.5-2%, and display well under 1% - but benchmarks vary hugely by industry, placement and audience. A rising CTR on the same audience usually means better creative or targeting.

Does a high CTR always mean success?

No. A clickbait ad can earn a high CTR and terrible sales. CTR measures interest, not intent to buy. The clicks that matter are the ones that convert, so always connect CTR to conversion rate and revenue by source.

How is CTR used in Quality Score?

Expected CTR is a major input to Google Ads Quality Score, which in turn affects your ad rank and CPC. A higher relevant CTR can lower what you pay per click - another reason to make ads genuinely relevant rather than broad.
